Richards scored 207 at Cape Town in his debut Test of 1970 against Australia and made 508 runs in his only series. The isolation of South African sport confined the rest of his genius to county cricket with Hampshire and Kerry Packer World Series. Many contemporaries called him the purest opener of the age.
